If a journalist published a detailed enough description of the 4G iPhone to prove that he had held one, yet didn’t reveal how, would Apple sic the space cops on him? I believe Gizmodo crossed a line, but at this point I’d be afraid to be a journalist with real sources inside Apple. Where is that line between brave journalism and stupidity? Is it just the cash involved? Would there even be an issue if Gizmodo had obtained the phone without paying for it? It seems the letter of the law would’ve still been broken, but it would’ve been even more convincing when they say they weren’t sure if it was a fake or not.

I made the following statement on Twitter regarding people’s reaction to Apple’s iPad:
The “wait until you hold one” argument about iPad should really go both ways.
I’m talking about those people who have publicly committed to buying an iPad when they are released (having never held one) and who also criticize or subtly mock those “Apple haters” who have said they will not purchase one because it’s missing X, Y, or Z feature. There’s the insinuation that the naysayers just don’t get what Apple has done with the device, that it will revolutionize computing as we know it, that it’s the perfect device for those with a tech phobia, that it would be perfect for “my mom.” I tend to agree with these statements based on what I’ve read from both Apple and the press that were there, and I intend to buy one or two at the initial release. However, many most of the people (including myself) talking this way haven’t actually used an iPad so they really don’t know if it will be all that and a bag of chips. It’s a 50/50 crapshoot for both sides at this point, and there are a lot of variables.
What’s interesting, though, is that many of the pro-iPad-because-I-think-it-will-be-cool people take the extra step of addressing the naysayers and suggesting that they should maybe wait until they actually hold and use one before reserving judgement. “Then you’ll see!” These tend to be commenters on the above linked posts and others.
I say, go ahead, we’re all making our judgements about the device, let’s not pretend otherwise. 99% of us will have already decided whether or not to pre-order one long before they arrive.
